IPL photofacial (1)

What Is an IPL Photofacial?

An intense pulsed light or IPL photofacial is a treatment used to treat dark marks, wrinkles, and other signs of aging on the skin. During an IPL photofacial at SkinSmart Dermatology, our provider will use a handheld device to emit pulses of light across your skin to treat sun damage and other issues found in the deeper layers of the dermis.

What Happens During an IPL Photofacial?

When you come in for your IPL photofacial treatment, our care provider will prepare your face by applying a cool gel. We’ll also provide you with glasses that will protect your eyes from the device light.

After your skin has been fully prepped and your eyes are protected, your care provider will run the IPL photofacial tool across your skin. As they move the device on your skin, you’ll receive quick bursts of light.

Most treatments last between 30 to 90 minutes. Three to six treatments are usually needed to create visible results.

Do IPL Photofacials Hurt?

IPL photofacials are typically painless but may be slightly uncomfortable for some individuals, with some patients saying that it feels like the sting of a rubber band being gently snapped on the skin. Most patients, on the other hand, report that they cannot feel anything when the treatment is applied.

After your treatment, you may feel like you have a sunburn, and your face may be sensitive to the touch. You may notice that your skin appears smoother immediately after treatment, but it will take additional sessions for your skin to fully harness the benefits of your IPL photofacial treatment.
