How does Smartxide Dot® work?
The SmartXide DOT laser offers the ultimate in skin rejuvenation in just under an hour for most treatments. The overall procedure is safer, faster and more efficient than treatment with a conventional ablative laser.
How Long Do SmartXide DOT Results Last?
Full results from fractional resurfacing treatments typically appear a few months after your appointment with gradual improvements in skin texture and tone during this time. The length of your results will be somewhat dependent on your natural aging process, but most people enjoy their SmartXide DOT treatment results for up to a year.
How Many Fractional Resurfacing Treatments Should You Get?
How often you should get fractional resurfacing depends on the laser used, but in general, patients require one to three SmartXide DOT treatments spaced about a month apart to see the best results. If you want to see continuous results from fractional resurfacing, maintenance treatments may be recommended every 12 to 18 months.
Who Is a Good Candidate for SmartXide DOT Fractional Resurfacing?
If you have sun-damaged skin, skin texture irregularities, or mild wrinkles, you could benefit from fractional resurfacing. However, SmartXide DOT generally isn’t recommended for darker skin tones since there’s a risk of discoloration.
If you have other conditions, like a history of keloid scarring, scleroderma, or prior radiation therapy, another option will likely be a better fit. Our team at SkinSmart Dermatology in Sarasota, Florida is happy to offer a wide range of cosmetic skin treatments and can recommend the one that’s best for you.
How to Prepare for SmartXide DOT Fractional Resurfacing
To get the best results from your SmartXide DOT fractional resurfacing treatment, you should avoid tanning or heavy sun exposure in the month leading up to your appointment. We also recommend a daily SPF to everyone, but it’s especially important to wear broad-spectrum sunscreen in the weeks leading up to your treatment.
Additionally, you’ll want to avoid any abrasive skin treatments like microdermabrasion or chemical peels in the month before your SmartXide Dot treatment.
You should let your provider know if you:
- Use medications like doxycycline or minocycline: These medications increase sun sensitivity and should be discontinued a few days before treatment.
- Have a history of herpes (including cold sores) or shingles around your treatment area: An antiviral medication like acyclovir or valacyclovir might be recommended to prevent triggering the virus during fractional resurfacing.
- Are concerned about any other skin conditions or medications: Our providers are happy to answer any questions about possible interactions.
What to Expect During SmartXide DOT Treatments
Traditional CO2 laser treatments are ablative, meaning they remove the skin’s surface layer which can be more uncomfortable. On the other hand, SmartXide DOT is a fractional CO2 laser that uses a micro-ablative method. This laser creates tiny microscopic perforations but leaves the surrounding skin undamaged so the treatment area heals faster.
SmartXide DOT typically only requires a topical anesthetic which we’ll apply before your treatment begins. You’ll also wear protective eyewear. When the laser is working, you might feel some mild discomfort or a stinging sensation.
Most fractional resurfacing appointments last less than an hour. Following the treatment, you can expect some swelling or redness and about as much discomfort as a sunburn. This will improve gradually over the first week revealing a more even skin texture underneath.
Recovery & Results
Treatments with the SmartXide DOT require minimal recovery time, typically three to five days. Immediately following treatment, patients may experience mild swelling and have a sunburned appearance. Over the following weeks and months, the body repairs the deeper dermal tissues that have been affected by the treatment, producing longer lasting benefits associated with a healthy, youthful appearance.
