Improvements After IPL Photofacial Treatment

Our team can use IPL on your face, chest, neck, and hands to improve the effects of sun damage and early signs of aging, such as:

  • Sun spots, age spots, and freckles
  • Dull complexions
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Redness from broken capillaries and rosacea

Every patient who visits our Sarasota office for skin rejuvenation begins with a cosmetic consultation. We will assess your skin's condition, the amount of damage, and your desired results. We can then determine if IPL or another treatment like SmartXide DOT® or e-Matrix™ will best address your concerns. Keep in mind that IPL might not be the best choice for very tanned skin; SkinSmart Dermatology consultants may offer better alternatives for this type of skin.

How Does IPL Photofacial Work?

A broad spectrum of light is transmitted through a small, smooth, transparent handpiece that we place gently on your skin. Cut-off filters in the handpiece change the wavelength range, enabling us to optimize it for different applications and skin types. The light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by the melanin or blood vessels, damaging the pigmented lesions. The body’s natural processes then remove the injured tissue, giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance. IPL also stimulates collagen production, which enhances skin tone and smoothes fine wrinkles.

Before and After IPL Photofacial Sarasota FL

What to Expect During IPL Photofacial Treatment

IPL photofacial treatments feel like the mild snapping of a rubber band against the skin. With each snap, the light energy penetrates deep below the skin’s surface to treat the source of your concerns. The length of these treatments depends on the size and number of areas treated. It usually takes 15 to 20 minutes to treat the entire face.

We typically recommend three IPL treatments spaced four weeks apart for optimal results. Patients can expect a 30% improvement after each one. To help your skin look its best, you may want to have follow-up treatments one to two times a year.

Recovery and Results After IPL Photofacial Treatment

After an IPL photofacial treatment, you can resume your regular activities immediately. After treatment, patients usually appear “sunburned.” Excess pigmentation like sunspots and freckles may darken for seven to 10 days before flaking off. Each treatment will make your skin smoother, more radiant, and evenly colored.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL Photofacial?

IPL photofacial treatments are often a good option if you are looking to improve visible sun damage, uneven pigmentation, or redness. If you have concerns such as sun spots, broken capillaries, or a dull complexion, this treatment may help you achieve a clearer, more even skin tone.

IPL tends to work best on lighter skin tones with visible pigment or vascular concerns. If your skin is currently tanned or prone to certain types of pigmentation changes, other treatments may be more appropriate. A consultation helps determine whether IPL aligns with your skin type, lifestyle, and overall goals.

If you spend time outdoors in the Sarasota area, IPL can also be part of a long-term plan to address cumulative sun exposure while maintaining healthier-looking skin.

How IPL Compares to Other Skin Treatments

IPL is one of several options for improving skin tone and texture, and it is often compared with treatments like laser resurfacing and microneedling. While these treatments may address similar concerns, they work in different ways.

IPL uses broad-spectrum light to target pigmentation and redness beneath the surface of your skin. This makes it especially effective for discoloration and vascular concerns. Laser resurfacing treatments, such as SmartXide DOT®, typically focus more on skin texture and deeper resurfacing. Microneedling and radiofrequency treatments are often used to support collagen production and improve overall skin firmness.

Each option has a different level of intensity, recovery time, and focus. In some cases, treatments may be performed separately or combined over time as part of a personalized plan designed around your skin’s needs.

What Results Look Like Over Time

IPL results develop gradually over a series of treatments. After your first session, you may notice mild darkening of pigmented areas as the treated spots begin to rise to the surface. This is a normal part of the process.

Over the following one to two weeks, these areas may flake off, revealing clearer-looking skin underneath. With each session, pigmentation and redness may continue to improve, and your skin tone can appear more even.

Because IPL also stimulates collagen production, subtle improvements in skin texture may continue to develop over time. Many people choose to maintain their results with periodic treatments, especially when managing ongoing sun exposure.

Before and After IPL Expectations

Before treatment, your skin may show visible signs of sun exposure, including dark spots, uneven tone, or redness. These concerns can develop gradually and may become more noticeable over time.

After a series of IPL treatments, many people notice that their skin appears brighter, clearer, and more balanced in tone. While results vary, improvements often look natural rather than dramatic, with gradual changes that enhance your overall complexion.

Because results develop over time, it can be helpful to track progress by taking photos before and after your treatment series. This allows you to see subtle improvements that may not be immediately noticeable day to day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Do to Prepare for My IPL Photofacial Appointment?

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning products for at least two weeks before your treatment. Additionally, discontinue the use of any retinoid products a few days before your appointment.

What Should I Expect After IPL Photofacial Treatment?

Your skin may feel slightly hot and sensitive after your IPL photofacial. This can last from several hours to a few days. To address these sensations, you can apply cold compresses or ice packs for periods of 15 to 20 minutes at a time. You may repeat this hourly as needed. Usually, after a few hours of cooling the skin, these sensations diminish enough to feel comfortable.

To ensure that your cellular turnover occurs efficiently after your IPL treatment, don’t exfoliate or pick your skin. You may develop small areas of darkening and flaking. Allow your skin to slough off naturally as you follow your aftercare instructions. If you exfoliate, rub, or pick the skin, you risk developing hyperpigmentation.

Depending on the area of the body you've had treated, flaking and sloughing may continue from 10 days to eight weeks. As this process continues, avoid sun exposure. In addition to applying broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen daily, you might wear a hat or other clothing to shield your skin from the sun.

How Long Do the Results of IPL Photofacial Last?

It’s hard to predict how long the results of IPL treatment will last. Every person is different. Your results will be influenced by your age, genetics, sun exposure, and other lifestyle habits. In general, we expect IPL results to last for six to 12 months. This timing is ideal for subsequent treatments, which, when continued once or twice a year, can help renew collagen growth and remodeling for younger-looking skin.

Are There Any Side Effects Associated With IPL Photofacial?

Common side effects include redness, slight swelling, and a sunburn-like sensation. These effects are usually mild and subside within a few hours to a few days.

Does IPL Photofacial Treatment Hurt?

As the pulses of intense light come into contact with the skin, you may feel minor snapping sensations. These can feel odd and may, as thermal energy accumulates in the treatment area, increase to a persistent, mild stinging.

Throughout the 30 to 90-minute treatment process, you may feel uncomfortable, but the sensations should not be intolerable. After the treatment is done, the effects of the thermal energy feel like a mild sunburn. This also does not hurt but may cause you to want to soothe with cold compresses.

Is the IPL Photofacial Only a Facial Treatment?

No! The purpose of the IPL photofacial is to correct the appearance of hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and other cosmetic imperfections in areas commonly affected by UV light. In addition to the face, you may schedule this treatment to address tissue irregularities on your hands, chest, shoulders, and neck.

Can I Wear Makeup After My IPL Photofacial Treatment?

You can wear makeup 24 hours after your IPL photofacial treatment. Ensure your skin is clean and moisturized before applying any makeup products.

Combining IPL photofacials with other treatments can maximize your skin rejuvenation results. Consult with your provider to determine which combinations would be best for your skin. Some treatments we offer include:
