Elizabeth Callahan, M.D. is the only dermatologist in Sarasota to treat double-chins with Kybella, the first FDA-approved non-surgical way to eliminate double chins and under chin fat deposits with simple injectable treatments

SARASOTA, FLA. – July 28, 2015Elizabeth Callahan, M.D., founder and medical director of SkinSmart Dermatology, is the first dermatologist in Sarasota to be chosen by the manufacturer to offer and perform Kybella™ under-chin fat dissolving injectable treatments.

“Kybella offers the first injectable, non-invasive way to treat and eliminate double chin fat,” Dr. Callahan explained. “Previously this area could only be treated through surgery or liposuction, both invasive techniques that required downtime and recovery. With Kybella, several treatments over a few months can eliminate double chins with minimal swelling and very little, if any, downtime.”

“We are excited to be the first dermatology office in Sarasota to be able to offer Kybella to patients. I am the only one who will perform Kybella treatments at SkinSmart Dermatology and I am one of the few practitioners currently trained on the proper technique for administering the treatment according to the manufacturer’s safety guidelines,” added Callahan.

Each in-office treatment session with Kybella is typically 15-20 minutes. When injected into subcutaneous fat, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved with Kybella, re-treatment is not expected.

With this nonsurgical treatment, many patients experience visible results in two to four treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart. Up to six treatments may be administered. Treatment with Kybella is customized by Dr. Callahan to achieve the patient’s aesthetic goals for an improved chin profile.

The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and formation of areas of hardness in the treatment area. In clinical trials, the incidence and severity of most side effects decreased with subsequent Kybella treatments. Kybella can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.

Kybella has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which 1,600 have been treated with Kybella.

About KYBELLA™

KYBELLA is the first and only approved injectable drug for contouring moderate to severe submental fullness, a condition that is commonly referred to as a double chin. KYBELLA is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. KYBELLA (deoxycholic acid) injection is indicated for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults.

The safe and effective use of KYBELLA for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region has not been established and is not recommended.
