What is Fractional Resurfacing?

Fractional resurfacing is a new technology providing the results of laser resurfacing without the downtime. The Starlux® laser is a newest treatment for age and sun spots, acne scarring, sun damaged skin and wrinkles around the eyes.  There is no need for pain medicine after the treatment, as any discomfort from the procedure is minimal. Because Lux 1540 Fractional Laser Treatments spare healthy tissue, it is effective even on delicate skin areas, such as the under eye area, neck, chest and hands

How Does It Work?

With Fractional Resurfacing technology, only a small fraction of the skin receives the laser light. The laser delivers a series of high precision microbeams which create narrow, deep columns of tissue penetration well below the epidermis (skin surface) and into the dermis, while preserving the superficial epidermis and surrounding healthy tissue from damage.  This "fractional" treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once, using the body's natural healing process to create new, healthy tissue to replace skin imperfections. The healthy cells in the untouched spots promote rapid healing of the entire treatment area, resulting in faster recovery time and minimal side effects. The result is softer, smoother and healthier skin without an uncomfortable healing period.  With this new technique, the entire face can be treated with the laser in approximately 50 minutes.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Treatments with the Fraxel laser have no significant recovery downtime.  Results are immediate and progressive. Immediately following treatment, patients may experience mild swelling and have a sunburn-like appearance.  Over the following weeks and months, the body repairs the deeper dermal tissues that have been affected by the Lux 1540 Fractional Laser treatment, producing longer beneficial changes associated with a healthy, youthful appearance.

Optimum results are generally achieved by a series of 3 to 5 treatment sessions spaced three to four weeks apart. Before starting treatment, the patient and Dr. Callahan will discuss which skin areas are appropriate for treatment, what kind of results you can expect, what to look for after treatment, and how often treatment will be scheduled.
