Who's doing your BOTOX®?
It is important to select an injector with the highest possible qualifications when considering such a service. In many physician's offices and medical spas, a nurse often performs this procedure. However, in our practice, Dr. Callahan alone will perform the injections. Her advanced fellowship training in dermatologic surgery and extensive education and knowledge of the facial muscles and structure are to your advantage. |

What is BOTOX®
The BOTOX® Cosmetic is used to relax the facial muscles responsible for stubborn wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, forehead, and elsewhere on the face. When these muscles relax, the skin becomes smoother and wrinkles fade or disappear entirely. The BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is quick, convenient, safe, and essentially painless.
The procedure takes only minutes and the injections will take effect over 3-5 days. The facial muscles will relax, smoothing away wrinkles and fine lines to produce a more youthful appearance that will last up to four months. Possible results with BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments are noticeable, but subtle. Unlike patients who undergo a full facelift or other surgical procedures, BOTOX® Cosmetic patients will not appear dramatically different after treatment. Often friends ask “Have you been on a vacation?”
History of BOTOX®
Botulinum toxins were first used in the late 1960s to treat neurological disorders. BOTOX® was first approved by the FDA in 1989 to treat eye muscle disorders such as blepharospasms, uncontrollable blinking, and strabismus, or crossed eyes. In 2000, BOTOX® was approved to treat cervical dystonia (a disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder contractions).
In April 2002, the FDA was satisfied by its review of studies indicating that BOTOX® reduced the severity of frown lines for up to 120 days and approved the drug for cosmetic use. Made from purified protein, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections block nerve impulses, weakening muscles to relax wrinkles and give the face a rejuvenated look. It is currently injected into the skin in areas surrounding the eyes, forehead, and mouth to smooth crow's feet, frown lines, and worry lines. Good results can be achieved with injecting the prominent “neck cords.”
